Beginning of Split Mountain Canyon
People originally thought this was a folded rock feature that happened over millions of years but later decided the rock was instantly bent as the result of a sudden catastrophic rock slide.

Spit Mountain Canyon
The back of the mountain is the coolest part of the drive.
Split Mountain Badlands
Behind the mountain the terrain opens up into harsh badlands that are very hot in summer.
For many miles the road flows between high sets of mud cliffs.
Split Mountain Badlands 2
Nicely filtered sediments with sparse vegetation.
Here and there are these spherical nodules sticking out of the sediments.
Sandstone Canyon reminded me of Titus Canyon in Death Valley

Upper Wash Vegetation 2
Finally getting into the Palisades the distribution of rocks and plants began to take on some artistic patterns.
What i noticed around the Palisades and the valley below was that all low areas were filled with a flat layer of sediments. Plants seems to grow in a race not to be buried.
Entrance to the Mud Palisades
A little ways into the canyon we chose the formations became more interesting.
